Quinn Melville   [www.quinn-melville.co.uk]

Quinn Melville Solicitors Peter Quinn is a former pupil of St Edward’s College and a graduate of Liverpool University. He served his articles at the established practice of Bell Lamb & Joynson. Upon admission, he joined the Liverpool Practice of E. Rex Makin & Co., which is one of the best known firms in the North West of England. He was with the firm for four years before joining David Phillips & Partners in 1986.

Peter headed up their Liverpool Office, and in 1995, together with Paul Barrow and Nick Melville, decided to set up a partnership, Quinn Melville. Since then, they have been operating from their offices based in Liverpool Cit Centre.

Paul Barrow heads up the Commercial Department, while Nick Melville heads the Criminal Department. Since 1995, Cathy Blackall and Paul Beck have both become partners. Cathy is in charge of the Litigation Department, specialising in Road Traffic work, while Paul specialises in Employment Law and Mental Health Work.

At the time of joining David Phillips & Partners, Peter began to specialise more and more in large scale Commercial Fraud work. Over the last 15 years, Peter has acted for many clients in this area of work, who have been involved in cases involving prosecuting authorities. These have included the Serious Fraud Office, the CPS (Specialist Fraud Division), the DTI, Customs & Excise and the Inland Revenue.

This has included, for example, successfully defending the former City Architect in Liverpool, who was charged in a very large corruption case. In 1990, Peter became involved in the largest financial investigation which Merseyside Police has ever conducted. They arrested and charged seven defendants. One of the four defendants represented by Peter was Derek Hatton. The case lasted for three and a half years, and all of Peter’s clients were acquitted.

Since then, Peter has dealt with work of this nature on a nationwide basis. The fact that Peter operates from Liverpool, has not prevented him from representing clients from afar apart as Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham and London.

He represented the Marketing Director of the Abbey National at a trial at the Old Bailey, which lasted nine months between 1997 and 1998. The case is said to be the longest running trial in the history of the Old Bailey!! Peter has also been involved in cases which have gone both to the House of Lords and the European Court of Human Rights.

Together with his partner, Paul Barrow, they represented the interests in this country of Louise Woodward, and indeed continue to do so. This case has gained worldwide publicity.

Over the years, Peter has advised and successfully defended many clients who have been in dispute with the Inland Revenue and Customs & Excise. Indeed, he has recently successfully concluded a case concerning twenty defendants involving an Inland Revenue prosecution, and is instructed in an extremely complex Serious Fraud Office prosecution, which is proceeding to trail next year.

He works with two of his other partners, Nick Melville and Nick Marray. In addition, Quinn Melville has five other solicitor consultants, together with all the necessary support staff. They are on call 24 hours a day, 365 day of the year. Peter is also assisted in his larger cases by William Seargent, who holds a Law degree and is a former Police Officer, awarded the Queens Police Medal. When he retired he was a Chief Superintendent and Head of the Merseyside Special Branch.

Quinn Melville is a young and forward-ooking practice that is continually expanding. The firm holds a Legal Aid Franchise, and for private clients, rates are very competitive. Each of the partners is prepared to meet prospective clients without charge, to see if they cab assist in any problems. They also frequently work in conjunction with a client’s other advisers, from Accountants, to IFA’s, Banks and other firms of Solicitors.
